Food preparation

Equipment Needed:

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Melt beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler or small glass bowl over a small pot of boiling water, stirring constantly until melted.

  2. Remove pan from heat but keep over the still-hot water to keep the mixture melted.

  3. Add essential oils to your preference. I just added peppermint in this recipe. I recommend adding a few drops at a time and testing a tiny amount on your arm to make sure the scent is to your liking.

  4. Once you’ve added the essential oils, use the pipette or a dropper to fill the lip balm tubes. This must be done quickly since the mixture will start to harden as soon as it is removed from the heat.

  5. Let tubes sit at room temperature for several hours until cooled and completely hardened before capping them.

Notes:

  • Use an extra teaspoon or two of beeswax if you prefer a thicker and longer-lasting lip balm or slightly less if you prefer a smoother and softer lip balm.

  • You can re-melt and add more of each ingredient during the melting process until you get the exact texture you want.

  • When experimenting, I’ve put a few drops of the melted mixture onto a piece of parchment paper and let harden in the fridge so I could test it before putting the mixture into tubes.

  • I also omitted the lanolin in this recipe, since it irritates my skin and I haven’t found that it is necessary, but feel free to add a small amount if you have it on hand.

  • If you’re switching from conventional lipstick and want some color and shimmer naturally, I recommend adding a tiny amount (1 tsp) of mica powder like this one. It has natural color and shimmer and blends perfectly.

  • Can add other essential oils, like lemon.

  • Can substitute peppermint for 1/2 tsp of raw honey plus 1/4 tsp of pineapple flavoring, mango instead of shea butter.

  • One person used Candelilla wax instead of bee's wax.

  • This makes 12-14 tubes.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Add a few inches of water to the bottom of a small pan and heat over medium heat.

  • Place a small heat-safe jar (pint size or smaller) in the water, being careful not to get any water inside the jar. You can also use a double boiler or a glass bowl perched on top of a small pot of water.

  • Add the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and one tablespoon beeswax to the jar and slowly melt, stirring occasionally. Make sure not to get any water in the jar.

  • When all the ingredients are melted, stir well and turn off the heat. Leave jar in the water to keep warm.

  • Stir in the essential oils.

  • Use a glass dropper to quickly fill the lip balm containers, like tubes or lip balm tins.

  • The mixture will settle slightly as it cools, so I top off the containers after about 2 minutes as they start to harden.

  • Let sit without touching for several hours or until completely hardened.

Notes

  • Shelf life and Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place for up about 2 years. The optional vitamin E oil helps extend the shelf life even further.

  • This will make a medium firm lip balm. If you prefer a firmer version, you can add more beeswax, up to double the recommended amount. If you prefer a smoother and more oily lip balm, you can reduce the amount of beeswax.

  • Certain oils, like cinnamon bark and lemongrass, can be really irritating on more sensitive areas like the lips.

  • Makes 18 tubes.

Equipment

  • Double boiler

  • Plastic pipettes or glass dropper

  • plastic lip balm containers

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon organic virgin coconut oil

  • 1 tablespoon raw shea butter or cocoa butter

  • 1 tablespoon beeswax pastilles

  • 1/2 tsp mica powder color of choice (I used a mix of rose red and natural gold)

  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions

  • Melt coconut oil, shea butter/cocoa butter and beeswax in a double boiler over medium heat.

  • When melted, stir well and turn off heat.

  • Add mica powder and (optional) essential oil.

  • Using a glass dropper or plastic pipette like this one, carefully transfer the mixture into empty lip balm containers. This must be done quickly before the mixture hardens. I filled 8 empty containers when I made this.

  • Let cool for an hour until mixture has completely hardened.

  • Use as regular lipstick/lip balm.
