Toothpicks

Birch is the CI Gold Standard material for toothpicks. The reasoning is straightforward: it is the only natural material in the category that does not require bleaching in standard production, possesses inherent antibacterial properties without treatment, is FSC-certifiable with a well-documented Scandinavian supply chain, and produces a splinter-resistant finished product by virtue of its grain structure alone.

What We Use at CI

The highest-documented, most fully disclosed product in this category. Fully qualifies on all eight CI rules without exception. CI highest recommendation.

Material: Perio Sticks are made from selected parts of the Nordic birch tree. The wood is harvested from sustainably managed forests in Scandinavia, and is not bleached, treated with dyes, or flavoring.

Why it qualifies: This is the most thoroughly documented CI-qualifying toothpick product identified in the full five-tier protocol search. Every required disclosure element is confirmed on the brand's own product page: Nordic birch (species named) ✓, sustainably managed Scandinavian forests (sourcing confirmed) ✓, eco-certified, unbleached, no dyes, no bleach, no chemicals ✓, unflavored ✓, FSC-certified paperboard packaging ✓. The flat, tapered anatomical profile is professionally designed for interdental use — meaningfully more effective and less likely to splinter than a standard cylindrical toothpick. Softens when moistened in the mouth for 30 seconds, bending up to 60 degrees to access posterior interdental spaces.

Minor flags: The product is technically a dental stick rather than a traditional cylindrical cocktail toothpick — the flat tapered profile is shaped for interdental use rather than food-party use. For consumers who want both a dining toothpick and an oral care toothpick, a plain birch cocktail pick may be needed alongside Perio Sticks. This is a format distinction, not a disqualifier.

Other CI-Approved Deodorants

Fully CI-qualifying on material, dye-free, flavoring disclosure (for essential oil and unflavored SKUs), and packaging. Minor flags on bleach status explicit confirmation and FSC certification. Recommended — purchase the unflavored or named-essential-oil SKU;

Material: American-milled northern white birch. We plant 100 trees for each tree milled.

Why it qualifies: American-milled northern white birch — domestic supply chain, traceably sourced, 100-trees-planted-per-tree-milled replanting commitment. Artisan small-batch manufacturing. Made in the USA with premium birchwood and natural essential oils — artisan small-batch manufacturing ensuring quality and freshness — sugar-free, chemical-free, and vegan-friendly formulation. For the unflavored SKU: no flavoring of any kind. For essential-oil-flavored SKUs: ingredients confirmed as pure essential oils (cinnamon essential oil, spearmint essential oil) — not "flavor" or "natural flavor."

Minor flags: Bleach-free status is not explicitly documented on the brand's primary product page — this is the one disclosure gap relative to Dr. Tung's, which explicitly confirms unbleached. The brand confirms "chemical-free" formulation, which implies unbleached, but CI requires explicit confirmation rather than inference. Daneson also sells bourbon-steeped and Scotch-steeped SKUs — these are flavored with alcohol from a named source (straight Kentucky Bourbon, single malt Scotch) rather than undisclosed flavor compounds; CI assesses these as disclosed and acceptable for adult use, though they fall outside the CI Gold Standard unflavored preference. FSC certification status is not confirmed in brand documentation — the 100-trees-per-tree replanting commitment demonstrates environmental stewardship but is not equivalent to third-party FSC chain-of-custody certification.

Brand: BiteMyWood (Cardboard Boxes)

Fully CI-qualifying on material, unbleached status (explicitly confirmed — the key differentiator over most competitors), dye-free, unflavored, and domestic supply chain. FSC certification gap noted. Cardboard box SKU preferred over plastic jar. The cleanest commodity-format cylindrical toothpick confirmed in the search.

Material: Crafted from premium, unbleached birchwood — 100% natural and chemical-free. No artificial additives, bleach, or toxins — just pure birchwood. American White Birch, USA-milled and USA-packaged in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Why it qualifies: This is the only commodity-format cylindrical toothpick brand identified in the full search that explicitly confirms unbleached status on its own product pages — the single most important disclosure gap in this category. Unbleached status is confirmed across multiple product SKUs: "crafted from premium, unbleached birchwood for a smooth, splinter-free experience — no artificial additives, bleach, or toxins." Unflavored confirmed. Dye-free confirmed. Chemical-free confirmed. American White Birch named. USA domestic supply chain and milling.

Minor flags: FSC chain-of-custody certification is not confirmed — the brand confirms sustainable sourcing but no third-party forest management certification is documented. Most packaging formats use a reusable plastic jar or tube — the cardboard box bulk SKU is the CI-preferred packaging format and should be specified at purchase.
