What We Use at CI
NOTE: Liquid castile soap is an aqueous formula — water-based, not fat-soluble — which means plasticizer migration risk is significantly lower than for castor oil or tallow-based products stored in plastic. The practical solution is to decant into an amber glass pump dispenser for daily use, which eliminates any residual concern. Glass pump dispensers are widely available for a few dollars.
NOTE: The palm kernel oil sourcing flag and the oil processing disclosure gap prevent a perfect clean sweep, but neither is a hard disqualifier. It performs better against the CI framework than every product evaluated in this category except Vermont Soap, Whole Naturals, and Country Rose. If you are looking to add a foaming format to your rotation — which none of the three previously ranked Gold Standard soaps offer — Kosmatology is a clean, credible, and well-certified choice. The refillable glass foaming bottle they sell separately is the ideal packaging companion and eliminates the plastic contact concern entirely.

NOTE: Vegetable glycerin sourced from flaxseed and noted as USP grade. Vegetable glycerin is clean and food-grade. USP designation here refers to purity grade, not the deodorized castor oil concern.

NOTE: Pure olive oil castile soap without coconut oil produces minimal lather and a thinner consistency than multi-oil formulas. This is not a defect — it is the nature of a single-oil olive soap — but it is a practical expectation to set. If you prefer more lather in daily hand washing, Vermont Soap or Whole Naturals will perform better. If maximum purity with minimum ingredients is the priority, Country Rose is the cleanest option that exists.
